Lemosho Route Summit Success Rate
At Oltau Safaris & Tours, we carefully monitor our Kilimanjaro climbs to ensure the highest safety standards and summit success rates. Below are the average success rates for the Lemosho Route based on our recent climbing seasons:
Lemosho 6 Days – Crater Rim: 95% | Uhuru Peak: 94%
Lemosho 7 Days – Crater Rim: 96% | Uhuru Peak: 95% (Highest Success Rate)
Lemosho 8 Days – Crater Rim: 95% | Uhuru Peak: 94%
Why Choose the 8-Day Option if the Rate Looks Slightly Lower?
The 8-day itinerary offers better acclimatization and is ideal for beginners. However, many experienced hikers choose the 6-day option and succeed due to prior high-altitude experience. Meanwhile, the 8-day trek attracts more first-time climbers, which slightly influences overall statistics.
Even so, the 8-day Lemosho Route remains one of the best and safest choices for anyone attempting Mount Kilimanjaro for the first time.
ITINERARY
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by a representative from Oltau Safaris & Tours and transferred to your hotel.
Your hotel provides comfortable rooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, and excellent hospitality to ensure a relaxing start to your journey. In the evening, our mountain specialists will conduct a detailed pre-climb briefing and equipment check to prepare you for your adventure.
Private packages include shared airport transfers. Additional private transfers are available at an extra cost. Hotel check-in begins at 2:00 PM.
After breakfast, your guide and support team will meet you for introductions and a final gear check before driving to Umbwe Gate, the starting point of your climb.
After completing park registration formalities, your trek begins through dense rainforest. This section is steep and can be wet, so rain gear is essential. By the time you arrive at Umbwe Camp, your crew will have prepared your tents and dinner.
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
Acclimatization Tips:
Drink at least 4 liters of water daily.
Maintain a slow and steady pace.
Immediately inform your guide if you experience symptoms such as headache or nausea.
The landscape transitions from rainforest to moorland as you ascend toward Barranco Camp. On clear days, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Meru in the distance.
Barranco Camp is beautifully located within a massive volcanic valley, offering spectacular views. The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
Today begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb. Although it may look intimidating, it is a manageable and exciting scramble with incredible views of Kibo Peak.
After descending into Karanga Valley and climbing again to Karanga Camp, you will enjoy lunch followed by a short acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp before returning for dinner and overnight rest.
Main Trek: 4–5 hours | 5 km (3.1 miles)
Acclimatization Hike: 1–2 hours | 2.5 km
After breakfast, you trek to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. The terrain becomes alpine desert, and the air noticeably thinner.
Upon arrival, your team will have camp fully prepared. After lunch, you will complete a short acclimatization hike toward Kosovo Camp before returning to rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
Around midnight, you begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.
Summit night is physically demanding due to altitude, but our experienced guides closely monitor each climber’s condition. Every two climbers are paired with a dedicated guide for added safety and support.
After celebrating at the summit and taking unforgettable photos, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Millennium Camp for overnight stay.
Total Trekking Time: 8–12 hours
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)
Please note: Most accidents occur during descent. Walk carefully and follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
