A 40-Ton Acrobat
Humpback whales Migration can grow up to 15–16 meters long and weigh as much as 40 tons, yet they move with a grace that seems almost impossible for a creature their size. They’re famous for breaching — launching most of their body out of the water and crashing back down in an explosion of white spray — as well as tail slaps, pectoral fin waves, and the haunting, complex songs male humpbacks sing underwater. Scientists still aren’t entirely sure why they breach; theories range from communication and courtship to simply shaking off parasites. Whatever the reason, watching it happen a few hundred meters from your boat is one of nature’s most humbling spectacles
Why Tanzania?
Tanzania’s coastline — the waters around Mafia Island, Mtwara, and Pemba — sits directly along the humpback migration route between the Southern Ocean’s rich feeding grounds and warmer breeding waters near the equator. Calm seas, warm temperatures, and food-rich currents make this stretch of the Indian Ocean an ideal stopover for mothers to nurse their calves and for males to compete for mates.
When to go: The whale-watching season generally runs from June through October, with sightings peaking around August and September, when the largest numbers of whales pass through the channel between Mafia Island and the mainland. Early morning departures tend to offer the calmest water and the best light for photography.
