Lemosho Route Summit Success Rate

At Oltau Safaris & Tours, we carefully monitor our Kilimanjaro climbs to ensure the highest safety standards and summit success rates. Below are the average success rates for the Lemosho Route based on our recent climbing seasons:

  • Lemosho 6 Days – Crater Rim: 95% | Uhuru Peak: 94%

  • Lemosho 7 Days – Crater Rim: 96% | Uhuru Peak: 95% (Highest Success Rate)

  • Lemosho 8 Days – Crater Rim: 95% | Uhuru Peak: 94%

Why Choose the 8-Day Option if the Rate Looks Slightly Lower?

The 8-day itinerary offers better acclimatization and is ideal for beginners. However, many experienced hikers choose the 6-day option and succeed due to prior high-altitude experience. Meanwhile, the 8-day trek attracts more first-time climbers, which slightly influences overall statistics.

Even so, the 8-day Lemosho Route remains one of the best and safest choices for anyone attempting Mount Kilimanjaro for the first time.

High-Altitude Drop Off & Acclimatization Trek

After breakfast, your guide and mountain crew will pick you up from the hotel. You will drive approximately 3–4 hours to Londorossi Gate, located on Kilimanjaro’s western side.

After registration and permit formalities, you will continue by off-road vehicle to the high-altitude drop-off point at 3,414 m (11,200 ft). From here, you begin trekking across the beautiful Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp.

This first trekking day allows your body to begin proper acclimatization while enjoying spectacular scenery.

Upon arrival at camp, our professional crew will have prepared your tents and a warm meal.

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)

Important Acclimatization Guidelines:

• Drink at least 4 liters of water daily
• Walk slowly and maintain a steady pace
• Inform your guide immediately if you feel any symptoms of altitude sickness

All Oltau Safaris guides are trained in high-altitude safety and emergency response.

Today’s trek takes you to one of the most important acclimatization points: Lava Tower (4,600 m / 15,091 ft).

The trail includes several ascents and descents. You will spend 1–2 hours at high altitude to help your body adjust, before descending to Barranco Camp.

From camp, you will see the impressive Barranco Wall — tomorrow’s exciting climb.

Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: 12 km (7.4 miles)

After an early breakfast, you will climb the famous Barranco Wall. Though it looks steep, it is a non-technical hike and offers incredible views of Kibo Peak.

The trail then continues with rolling ascents and descents toward Karanga Camp.

Later in the afternoon, you will complete an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp before returning to Karanga.

Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Acclimatization Hike: 1–2 hours

This additional hike significantly increases your summit success rate.

After breakfast, you will trek to Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,331 ft) — your base for the final summit attempt.

Once at camp, you will rest and prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Your guides will conduct a final summit briefing before early dinner and rest.

Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)

Around midnight, you will begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,340 ft) — the highest point in Africa.

This is the most challenging but most rewarding day of your journey. Our experienced guides will support and monitor you throughout the climb.

After celebrating at the summit, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue to Millennium Camp.

Trekking Time: 8–12 hours
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)

Safety Reminder: Most accidents happen during descent, so careful footing is essential.

After breakfast, you will descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates.

Our team will then transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha for a well-deserved rest.

Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 12 km (7.4 miles)

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight.
